Will Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Sardar Udham’ Change The Way Punjabis Have Been Represented In Bollywood?

With the announcement of the official release date of ‘Sardar Udham’ starring Vick Kaushal in the lead role, the Punjabi audience has already started expecting brilliance from the movie. Set to release on 16 October 2021 on Amazon Prime Video, Sardar Udham narrates the story of the revolutionary Shaheed Udham Singh, who assassinated the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in India, Michael O’Dwyer.

On 27 September 2021, the official teaser of the upcoming film was dropped. Interestingly, the day also marked the birth anniversary of another great revolutionary from Punjab, Shaheed Bhagat Singh. The audience got to see a glimpse of Vicky Kaushal’s look in the teaser of the movie and were blown away. Vicky Kaushal’s look as Shaheed Udham Singh has been nailed off by the makers and is almost perfect!

Shaheed Udham Singh’s life marked an important part of the freedom struggle of India against British Rule. The assassination of Michael O’Dwyer shook the whole British Empire in India and Udham Singh’s was etched forever in the books of history. There have been several attempts by Punjabi Cinema to make a film on the life of the great revolutionary, but all of them have fallen short of people’s expectations.

Punjabis have always had minimal coverage by Bollywood and the little that they have had, has always been spoiled by the Hindi Industry. Either Punjabi characters have been shown to be some masculine men or they have been presented as comical figures. It is probably for the first time that a Bollywood movie of high production is being made on the life of a great Punjabi Revolutionary.

When a film about the history and a historical figure of such stature is made, facts are an important decider if the movie is actually good or not. The Punjabi audience also has high expectations from National-awardee Vicky Kaushal and Director Shoojit Sircar in ensuring that Sardar Udham turns out to be factually accurate. The previous films on the life of Shaheed Udham Singh lacked factual accuracy and it is for the first time that a film on his life is being made under such huge production and reputed faces working on it, and the Punjabi audience is expecting nothing less than perfection.
