World’s Most Powerful Passports 2021: How Strong Is The Indian Passport In 2021

The Henley Passport Index has published its official list of countries with the strongest passports for the year 2021. The first position has been shared by Japan and Singapore. Second position on the list is again, in sharing between South Korea and Germany. It is for the third consecutive year that Japan has maintained its rank as high as #1 on the list.

The list is prepared by Henley and Partners, which is a London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm. The list covers 227 destinations and 199 passports and ranks them as the world’s strongest and weakest passports every year.

The basis of this report is the number of countries that the respective country’s passport-holders are allowed to visit without a prior Visa. Japan and Singapore passports allow visa-free travel to 192 countries, making them the strongest passports in the world as of 2021. The data is provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The Indian Passport has been ranked as the 90th strongest passport in the world in 2021. It grants visa-free travel to as many as 58 countries. India’s rank is shared with Tajikistan and Burkina Faso. Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, and Yemen are among the least powerful of the lot. India has slipped 6 places down as compared to last year’s ranking on the same list.

This year’s list has been an interesting one because it comes after a state when the whole world went into total lockdown for more than a year. Inter-country travel was banned for most of the countries in 2020 due to the fear of the spread of COVID-19. And now, after the wave of coronavirus seems to have settled down, the travel rate is very high. International students, migrant workers, NRIs who were stuck in other countries for more than a year are rushing to travel back.
