The mysterious death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken a shocking turn. His longtime bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami has alleged that Garg was poisoned by his manager Siddharth Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta. He further claimed that the duo staged the singer’s death in Singapore to make it appear accidental. These explosive claims have intensified the investigation into the demise of Zubeen Garg.
According to testimony recorded under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Goswami said Sharma’s conduct before the tragedy appeared suspicious. Sharma, now named an accused in the FIR, faces serious non-bailable charges including murder, criminal conspiracy, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The developments have brought the Zubeen Garg case back into public focus.
Suspicious Behaviour on the Yacht Trip
Goswami recalled that Sharma displayed unusual behaviour during their stay at Singapore’s Pan Pacific Hotel and the yacht trip where tragedy struck. Allegedly, Sharma took control of the yacht from its sailor, causing it to wobble dangerously in mid-sea. Goswami also claimed that Sharma stopped Assam Association member Tanmoy Phukan from arranging drinks, insisting he alone would supply them.
During the critical moments when Zubeen Garg was struggling to breathe in the water, Sharma was reportedly heard shouting, “Jabo de, jabo de” (“let him go”). Goswami emphasised that Garg, a trained swimmer who had coached both him and Sharma, could not have died simply by drowning, further fuelling suspicions.
Allegations of Poisoning and Cover-Up
Goswami has accused Sharma and Mahanta of poisoning Garg and choosing Singapore deliberately to cover up their plan. He revealed Sharma also instructed him not to share yacht videos with anyone. When Zubeen Garg was frothing from his mouth and nose, Sharma allegedly dismissed it as acid reflux and blocked attempts to get urgent medical help. Goswami claimed this negligence hastened Garg’s death.
Both accused have denied the allegations during interrogation. However, Goswami’s testimony has added a new dimension to the mystery surrounding Zubeen Garg and his untimely demise.
