Former Jharkhand Governor & NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu was elected the 15th President of India.

She is the first tribal woman & the youngest to be elected at that position.

She was declared elected on Thursday after four rounds  of counting of votes.

She had crossed the halfway mark after the 3rd round of counting itself, posting a remarkable lead over her rival Yashwant Sinha.

After four rounds of polling, Ms. Murmu received 2,824 votes ,76,803 while Mr. Sinha received 1,877 votes valued at 3,80,177.

She received 64.03% of total valid votes polled, much more than what was openly declared in her support.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to greet Ms. Murmu at her residence in New Delhi.

Ms. Murmu, who had been a former Governor of Jharkhand, comes from  the Santhal tribe.

She was born in the district of Mayurbhanj, coming up the tough way in life, graduating & teaching  in Odisha.

Congratulatory messages spread out as her victory was confirmed, with Union Ministers Rajnath Singh  & Amit Shah.
