For the first time ever, India is close to winning a Gold Medal in an athletics event at the Olympics. It is all because of a 25-year old athlete from Patiala, Punjab, India, Kamalpreet Kaur. She nailed a 64m throw in Discus throw event which straight away qualified her for the finals of the event.
Like every competitor, she got three attempts. She began with a 60.29m throw. In the second one, she improved it with a 63.97m throw and then finally hit the qualification mark of 64m in the last attempt. The final will be held on August 2 and Virendra Poonia, the coach of Kamalpreet, feels that the athlete can win India its first ever medal in athletics if she produces her best.
Kamalpreet Kaur is also the national record holder in Discus throw. She has a throw of 66.59m to her name, which she nailed during the Indian Grand Prix-4 making her the national record-holder and sixth best figure in the world. If Kamalpreet successfully produces this performance, she is sure to win India a medal, even a gold.
The most rare achievement by a woman athlete at the Olympics stage remains Krishna Poonia’s at the London Olympics 2012, 9 years ago. She finished sixth with a throw of 63.62m in the Discus throw event.
Kamalpreet Kaur has high expectations from her name. The final is set to take place on 2 August. Kamalpreet was the only second athlete to directly qualify for the finals, the other one being America’s Valarie Allman, who had a 66.42m to her name. She is going to pose a big threat to other athletes as she has the best figures of 70.01m this year. All the Indians have their hopes from Kamalpreet and we are sure she will bring laurels to the country!
