At a ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday morning, Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud was sworn in as the fiftieth Chief Justice of India. The swearing-in was administered by President Droupadi Murmu. With this, the country got its fiftieth chief justice. Now justice DY Chandrachud will be serving as the chief justice till November 10, 2024.

Subsequently, justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud has taken over justice UU Lalit who demitted office on Tuesday. “Serving the average citizen is my first responsibility,” Justice Chandrachud stated in his first statement after taking office. Additionally, he pledged to improve the court and judicial systems.
Notably, after two years as Chief Justice, Justice DY Chandrachud will retire on November 10, 2024. He follows Justice UU Lalit, who presided over the supreme court for just 74 days. Moreover, now justice DY Chandrachud is the fiftieth chief justice of India who will now be heading the supreme court.
Justice DY Chandrachud has a long history of working on some exemplary cases like the Ayodhya verdict. In May 2016, Justice Chandrachud was promoted to the position of Supreme Court judge. He has served on several benches, including the Constitutional, which rendered important rulings in cases involving Ayodhya and the right to privacy.
Moreover, justice Chandrachud is known for his fearless assertions and historical decisions. In February 2018, Supreme Court Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, during the hearing of landmark Aadhaar case’s, stated, “I have been hearing this from the beginning: that if I am not with you, then I am an Aadhaar judge. We are not supporting the government. We also won’t adhere to the NGO line!”
Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud graduated in mathematics and economics from St Stephens College in 1979 before completing a law degree at the University of Delhi in 1982. From there, he graduated from Harvard with a Doctorate in Judicial Sciences after first earning an LLM. Notably, his father Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud served as Chief Justice of India for seven years, from 1978 to 1985, the longest tenure of any Supreme Court chief justice.
