Do You Know Elon Musk Once Called Ratan Tata ‘A Scholar And A Gentleman’

One of the most respected industrialists Ratan Tata has not only shared his popularity in India but globally. There have been several businessmen across the world who have expressed their admiration for the Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus and one of them is Tesla chief Elon Musk.

Yes, Elon Musk once called Ratan Tata a ‘Scholar and Gentleman’. In one of the interviews, Musk praised Tata when he was asked about the Tata Nano car, which had just been released then. He was asked, “Take for a moment Ratan Tata, what he’s doing in India — developing a little sedan for $2300. Where do you put that in the whole equation of where the future of cars is?”

To this, Elon replied that he knows Ratan Tata and he thought that it’s a good idea to have affordable cars. While Musk seemed to have his reservations about the project, his admiration for Tata was clear. He then added, “The problem with something like this is I wouldn’t say problem, because Ratan Tata is a gentleman and a scholar, it’s a good idea. But where it’s going to become challenging in the future is when the price of gasoline rises, the cost of acquiring the car is much less of an issue than the cost of running the car.”

Further, while the Tata Nano was priced extremely cheaply, Musk seemed to be implying that, in the long run, the Tata Nano’s cost advantage will be lost due to rising gasoline prices.
