The upcoming Punjabi movie Ni Main Sass Kuttni was surrounded in an uninvited controversy after the Chairperson of Punjab State Women Commission; Manisha Gulati expressed displeasure against the film’s title.
Manisha had taken to her Instagram account where she shared a video addressing the public and stating that the title of upcoming Punjabi movie, ‘Ni Main Sass Kuttni’ is extremely disrespectful and degrading against women. Manisha also raised her concern regarding the film might promote violence in Punjab’s culture.
But the film’s team has finally come forward to clarify and release their official statement regarding the same. The team of Ni Main Sass Kuttni recently held a press conference in Mohali where the film’s actors Mehtab Virk, Tanvi Nagi, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Anita Devgan were present.
The strongest take of NMSK team on this issue was the fact that the title of their film is inspired from Punjabi folk songs and boliyaan. They highlighted that there are a number of songs where phrases like ‘sass kuttni’ have been used, and they surely do not follow a literal meaning.
Speaking in motion of the same, actor Gurpreet Ghuggi said, ‘I respect Manisha Gulati for how she listened to both sides of the stories and understood that there is nothing wrong with the film’s title. I feel pity for the narrow-minded people who filed complaints about this issue. Also, sass kuttni is a phrase that is being used for years in Punjab, if this was objectionable then this would have ignited controversies 20 years back already. The term does not have a literal meaning but is used just as a satire expressing the sweet and salty relationships between a sass and a nooh (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law).

Anita Devgan also put forward her views on this controversy and said she is disappointed with the person who issued this complaint without knowing and gathering any information or knowledge about Punjab’s culture and folk history.
Speaking of the film, Ni Main Sassa Kuttni is set to release on 29 April. It stars Mehtab Virk and Tanvi Nagi in the leading roles, and has been garnering fan’s appreciation for its trailer and already released songs.
