Punjab: Capt Amarinder To Merge Punjab Lok Congress With The BJP Next Week

Former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s party Punjab Lok Congress will soon be merged into the saffron party. As per the sources, next week Captain Amarinder Singh may meet some senior BJP leaders in Delhi, after which the official announcement of the Punjab Lok Congress’ merger in the BJP may be made.

In the recent assembly elections, Captain Amarinder Singh, after resigning from the CM post, had quit the Congress party and formed his own party – Punjab Lok Congress. The PLC was an ally of the BJP, though Captain Amarinder himself lost from his bastion Patiala.

But in the past few months, a lot of heavyweight leaders have left the Congress party and joined the BJP, including Sunil Jakhar, who is a close aide of Captain Amarinder Singh. Though Captain himself lost the election, his team’s electoral management was one of the major reasons behind the victory of the Congress party in the state in 2017 and then in 2019 despite the Modi wave.

As of now, no official announcement has been made, but the sources close to Captain Amarinder, claims that his party will soon merge into the Bharatiya Janata Party. Since Sunil Jakhar’s exit from the grand-old-party, the INC is continuously witnessing defections.

The BJP has been eyeing Punjab for a long time, but was a junior partner with its former ally Shiromani Akali Dal, which separated itself from the NDA alliance when the farm laws were introduced. Now the BJP is focusing to expand itself in Punjab with the help of former Congress stalwarts like Sunil Jakhar and Captain Amarinder Singh.
