Sidhu Moosewala’s latest song ‘SYL' talks about socio-political issues of Punjab especially SYL.
Moosewala also mentions ‘Balwinder Singh Jattana’ , an important figure in Punjab history & especially the SYL in song.
Balwinder Singh Jattana is viewed as a ‘Sikh Liberation Hero’ by the Sikh Community.
He played a key role in protesting against the building of the Satluj-Yamuna-Link.
In 1982, the Satluj-Yamuna-Link Canal was proposed. The link would carry Punjab’s water to neighbouring states including Haryana.
On 23 July 1990, Jattana along with Jagtar Singh Panjola, Balbir Singh Fauji & Harmeet Singh Bhaowal reached the head office of the SYL project in Chandigarh Sector 26.
The Chief Engineers of the SYL project held a meeting on the second floor of the head office.
Jattana, aided by 3 others, entered the building & assassinated M.S. Sikri & Avtar Aulakh, the Chief Engineers of the SYL project.
The police had kept a Rs. 16 Lakh cash reward on Balwinder Singh’s head on September 4, 1991.
Later on the same day, they were killed in an encounter with the Police.
