Who Is Draupadi Murmu? The NDA’s Presidential Candidate! All You Need To Know

After a series of meetings and brainstorming sessions, the BJP finally declared Mrs. Draupadi Murmu as its candidate for the upcoming presidential polls. The 64 year old Draupadi Murmu will be the first ever tribal lady President of India, if elected, which is speculated as per the numbers of the NDA alliance. 

As stated by Bharatiya Janata Party national chief JP Nadda, there were a total of 20 names in the BJP’s list for its presidential candidate, amongst which, Mrs. Draupadi Murmu has been shortlisted and announced as the candidate of the NDA alliance. 

Mrs. Murmu belongs to Odisha. Before entering the field of politics, she used to be a teacher. She is a BJP leader who started her political career as a  councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997, later became the Vice chairperson of Rairangpur NAC – National Advisory Committee. She even served as the governor of Jharkhand state from 2015 to 2021. She was the first woman governor of Jharkhand. 

She even served as a minister of state in the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance government in Odisha from March 6, 2000 to August 6, 2002. She won the assembly election from Rairangpur assembly constituency in the year 2000 and 2004. Having experience as a governor and handling various ministries, Mrs. Murmu’s administrative hold is quite good. 

Now she is the presidential candidate of the NDA alliance for the Indian presidential polls scheduled to be held on July 18, for which the results will be announced on July 24. While the UPA, moreover the joint united opposition has fielded former union finance minister Mr. Yashwant Sinha as its candidate. Though the numbers are clearly favouring the NDA candidate, the opposition’s experiment still seems quite interesting. 

Though, if elected, which is speculated as per the figures of the NDA alliance, Mrs. Draupadi Murmu will be the first ever tribal lady to serve as the president of India.
