Comedian Vir Das Booked For ‘Insulting India’, Issues Clarification After Massive Backlash

Indian comedian Vir Das, who is currently in the US, has uploaded a video on YouTube on Monday, titled “I come from two Indias”. The monologue in the video was part of his recent performance at the John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC.

In the six-minute video, Vir Das talks about some of the most topical issues in India, from its battle against Covid-19, rape cases, a crackdown against comedians to the farmers’ protests. Unfortunately, Vir has to face controversy as many on social media calling him out for “insulting India”.

Soon after the clip went viral all over the internet. The Comedian issued a clarification on his Twitter and wrote that he intended to remind that the country, despite its issues, was “great”.

But apart from this, a complaint was lodged against comedian Vir Das for ‘derogatory statements against India’ on Tuesday. According to the reports of DNA, the complaint has been lodged with the Mumbai Police by high court lawyer Ashutosh Dubey. Dubey is a practising legal solicitor at Bombay High Court and serves as the legal advisor of BJP-Maharashtra Palghar District.

In his complaint, Dubey has mentioned that the comedian is trying to portray India as the biggest threat to Indian democracy and that the intention behind the video seems to be to instil fear and hatred among the people of the country. He further mentioned that Vir Das made degrading remarks against the PM, accusing him of mismanaging the PM CARES fund. “He attracts IPC sections amongst others and it is necessary to issue notice to the intermediaries to take the appropriate action failing which the Indian Comedian (Vir Das) must be acted upon as per the provisions of law”, the lawyer wrote.

Also, Advocate Ashutosh Dubey said that Vir is spoiling the image of India and action should be taken against him.

Soon after Vir dropped the video, he faced massive backlash on Twitter but there are some sections of people who are lauding him for his courage.
