A very heartbreaking and heinous news grabbed today’s headlines. In an incident that has sent shock waves across the Capital, a 20-year-old woman was abducted by at least 11 members of a family in her neighbourhood.

She was harassed and forcibly chopped her hair off, blackened her face, put a garland of footwear around her neck, and paraded her in the lanes near their house on Wednesday, police said.

Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal, who met the woman, in a tweet said that she has demanded the Delhi Police for action and more arrests.

“A 20-year-old girl was gang-raped by illegal liquor sellers in Kasturba Nagar. Her head was tonsured and black paint was put on her face and then she was paraded and she was paraded in the streets wearing a garland of slippers. I am issuing notice to Delhi Police. All the accused men and women should be arrested and the girl and her family should be given security,” Ms Maliwal said while sharing the video.

From the reports of Hindustan Times, it has been suggested that the motive for the crime, police said, was personal enmity. The family held the woman responsible for the death by suicide of one of their kin, a 16-year-old boy whose advances were rebuffed by the woman.

Further, when asked by the victim, in her statement to police, the woman alleged she was at home with her two-year-old child on 26 January when some of the accused allegedly barged into their home, abducted her and took her to their house in Shahdara.

She alleged that a group of men locked her inside the house and raped her while the women “instigated” the men and later thrashed her with sticks. They also blackened her face and paraded her with a garland of slippers around her neck.

While, the video from the incident went viral, Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal took to his official twitter handle and requested the Union Home Minister and the L-G to direct police to take strict action and pay attention to the law and order situation

Now, the case under sections of illegal confinement, abduction, gangrape, and physical and sexual assault has been registered against 11 people.
