In 1876 during British rule, the Prince of Wales and Queen Victoria visited India on a tour. As pink is known as the color of hospitality, Maharaja Ram Singh, then ruler of Jaipur painted the whole city pink in color to welcome the royal guests. The tradition has been sincerely followed by the residents of Jaipur, who are now, by law, compelled to maintain the pink color of their buildings and any other kind of architecture.
